The Rich Text Editor & WordPad to PDF is a simple online word processor. Write letters, reports, notes and CVs with the formatting you’d expect from WordPad, see exactly how the pages will look, and download a proper PDF with real, selectable text. No software to install.

Format text with a WordPad-style editor

  • Text

    Sans, serif and monospace fonts, sizes from 8 to 72 pt, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, superscript, subscript, text colour and highlight.

  • Paragraphs

    Headings, left, centre, right and justified alignment, line spacing, indents, bulleted and numbered lists, quotes and code blocks.

  • Document elements

    Tables (add and remove rows and columns), pictures with sizes, links, horizontal lines and page breaks.

  • Editing

    Undo and redo, find, select all, word and character counts, and the usual keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I, Ctrl+U, Ctrl+Enter for a page break).

Customise page size, margins and orientation

Choose A4, Letter, Legal or A5, portrait or landscape, narrow, normal or wide margins, the default font and size and the space after paragraphs. Add a header and footer to every page and page numbers (“1, 2, 3” or “Page 1 of 3”). The editing area takes the shape of your page, and Preview pages shows the finished PDF page by page before you download it.

Convert rich text, Word and TXT files to PDF

Paste formatted text from websites, emails or Word, or open a .docx, .txt or .html file, and turn it into a PDF. Word documents keep their headings, emphasis, lists, tables and pictures; complex layouts such as text boxes and columns can’t be kept. Your draft is saved automatically in your browser only, and you can also download a plain-text copy. The PDF uses embedded fonts that cover Latin, Greek and Cyrillic letters. Arabic, Urdu and other right-to-left or complex scripts aren’t supported yet.

Privacy and price

Your PDFs are processed by your own browser (using the open-source pdf-lib and PDF.js libraries), so they’re never uploaded to us or anyone else, and nothing is kept after you close the page. How to use the Rich Text Editor & WordPad to PDF

  1. Type or paste your text, or open a .docx, .txt or .html file. Format it with the toolbar: fonts, sizes, colours, headings, lists, tables, pictures and page breaks.
  2. Set the paper size, orientation, margins, header, footer and page numbers in Page setup, then press Preview pages to see every page exactly as it will print.
  3. Press Download PDF. Your PDF has real, selectable text; you can also download a plain .txt copy.

Is the Rich Text Editor & WordPad to PDF free?

Using it and previewing the result are free. Downloading, copying or saving the final result uses 1 export: from £1.00 for 5, or included in a monthly plan. The same result again within 24 hours is free.

Is the text in the PDF selectable and searchable?

Yes. The PDF is built from your text, not from a picture of the page, so you can select, copy and search it, and it stays sharp at any zoom.

Will my formatting look the same in the PDF?

Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, colours, highlights, fonts, sizes, headings, alignment, line spacing, lists, quotes, tables, pictures, links and page breaks all carry over. Lines may wrap slightly differently from the editor, so use Preview pages to check the exact layout before you download.

Can I open a Word document?

Yes, .docx files open with their text, headings, bold and italic, lists, tables and pictures. Complex layouts such as text boxes, columns and exact page layout can’t be kept. Older .doc and .rtf files need to be saved as .docx first.

Is my document saved?

Your draft is saved automatically in this browser only, so you can come back to it on the same device. Nothing is uploaded. Use New to clear it, and download your work to keep a copy.

Which languages work?

Languages written in Latin, Greek and Cyrillic letters (English, French, Polish, Russian, Turkish and many more). Right-to-left and complex scripts such as Arabic and Urdu, Indian scripts, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and emoji can’t be shown in the PDF yet; the editor warns you before you download.

Is my information uploaded?

No. It works entirely in your browser, so your text and files stay on your device.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install.
